How to Make your Home More Beautiful

Use flowers, balloons, polka dots, neons for a happy house

In the post-Marie Kondo world, it’s well-established that ‘sparking joy’ is very important in interiors. While Kondo does it by decluttering, interior guru Ingrid Fetell Lee talks of using color. In her book The Aesthetics of Joy, Lee mentions how pops of colour energise spaces and people. In her TEDtalk, “How can we design more joy into our surroundings”, she mentions elements like bright colours, abundance, and round shapes are universally joyful.

Lee believes that designing more joyful spaces can change how we feel and act; and says, “When designing and decorating your home space, add everyday objects that give you joy. A colourful polka-dotted wall can make a child’s room spark instant joy. You can make your space happy using repeating patterns like polka dots and stripes, layering of textures.” Here’s how to decorate for delight:

Does your home spark joy?

USE COLOUR: Have colour popping out from different spaces. Lee painted an antique bench in green to create an immediate impact when you walk in. Her advice? Keep it bright as the more pigment in the colour, the more joy it will bring. You can use balloons, toys, flowers or pots for this.

GO ROUND: Round coffee tables spark more joy than square. When researchers put people into functional MRI machines and showed them pictures of angular objects, they found that the amygdala (emotional hub of our brain) lit up – and that’s a sign of unconscious fear or anxiety. When they looked at round objects, the amygdala stayed silent. There is something in our brains that finds a sense of ease and playfulness around curves.

GET NATURE INSIDE: The power of nature is that it not only elicits joy; it also reduces stress. Studies show that bringing nature indoors decreases our tendency to brood over problems, making us literally feel more carefree. Try bringing the outside in by sitting somewhere with a view of trees or greenery, use nature imagery into your decor or listen to nature sounds like birdsong.

USE SURPRISE ELEMENTS: Unexpected touches make everyday items feel new. Do little things around the home to spark joy. Keep colourful chairs with an old wooden table. Artist Jessi Raulet can’t resist covering everything in her path with vibrant swirls of paint, whether it’s a pair of shoes or a pineapple. Artist Illoosh Judge Ahluwalia loves painting lively colours as she feels it brings joyful energy in her life, “Colourful pops at windows or doors immediately make your environ come alive. For instance, if you can’t change your cabinets you can get a bright kettle or a vibrant rug. A small joyful pop helps make all the stuff you don’t love recede in the background.”
