What Is Thyroid Disease, Its Signs, Symptoms, Causes, And Treatments

Hormones are an essential part of the body, but it can be difficult to deal with at times. Men and women have a different type of hormones but sometimes they get changed with some diseases and wrong habits.

Thyroid disease is one of the diseases that are caused by hormonal change. It is the most dominant of the endocrine disorders. Thyroid disorders are the cause of the hypothyroidism, which is the most common disease nowadays.

It is important to know the root cause of disease. Here is everything that you should know about thyroid disorders, hypothyroidism, symptoms, signs, causes and treatments. Continue reading to learn about it.

What Is Thyroid Disease?

The thyroid is a small gland which is present in your neck just below Adam’s apple. It releases two hormones that are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones increase the oxygen in the body and stimulate cells to produce proteins. By controlling the release of these hormones, the thyroid determines the metabolic rate of most of your body's organs.

The thyroid gland is regulated by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which is made by the pituitary gland in the brain. Normally, when thyroid hormone levels in the body are high, they will "switch off" the production of TSH, which in turn stops the thyroid from making more T4 and T3.

Thyroid disease occurs when the thyroid gland stops regulating by TSH. It becomes either hypothyroidism that means underactive or hyperthyroidism that means overactive.

Women suffer more from thyroid disorder than men. Cancer may also develop in the thyroid gland.

What Is Hypothyroidism And Its Symptoms:

This disease means that your thyroid gland is underactive. Continuously losing weight is one of the main hypothyroidism symptoms. But its other symptoms can vary from person to person.

Body system gets slow down with low thyroid hormone in the blood because it is the cause of lack of energy. Lack of metabolism, cold body temperature and constipation are also the hypothyroidism symptoms.

What Is Hyperthyroidism And Its Symptoms:

This thyroid disease is the total opposite of hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism means that your thyroid gland is overactive and too much thyroid hormone in the blood.

Hyperthyroidism speeds up the metabolism and feeling very anxious, irritated, and nervous are the hyperthyroidism symptoms. It also causes trouble in sleeping and may also experience muscle weakness.

Causes Of Thyroid Diseases:

They are caused by problems in the thyroid gland and inappropriate TSH levels.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. It is a condition where thyroid gland parts get destroy by the antibodies which made by the body.  Medications amiodarone, lithium and surgical removal are also the cause of hypothyroidism.

The hyperthyroidism causes are different from the hypothyroidism. Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. This condition occurs when the immune system produces an antibody that stimulates the entire thyroid gland; this leads to overactivity and higher levels of thyroid hormones.

How To Treat Thyroid Diseases:

If you find thyroid diseases symptoms that are above given then go to see a doctor. Doctors will conduct blood report to confirm thyroid disorders.

The treatment for thyroid disease includes the prescription of a synthetic hormone called levothyroxine.  Also, anti-thyroid drugs that block the production of your own thyroid hormones may also be used.
